Tiffin Aire offers instruction for Airplane ratings from Private Pilot through Airline Transport Pilot (see requirements below). Our instructors will guide you through all the ground and flight training that you need to accomplish any rating. Types of Pilot Licenses

Private Pilot Certificate

Allows you to fly with passengers in VFR (good) weather conditions

To obtain this license, you must do the following:

  • Pass a medical examination administered by an FAA designated doctor.
  • Be at least 16 years old to solo, 17 to receive your license.
  • Pass a written examination, consisting of multiple choice questions, with a score of 70% or better.
  • Have a minimum of 40 flight hours: 20 hrs dual (with an instructor), 8 hrs cross country/3 hrs dual and 5 hrs solo, 3 hrs night flying/10 takeoffs and landings, at least 5 hrs ground instruction in preparation for the written exam
  • Successfully complete a flight test given by an FAA designated Examiner. At the completion of this stage, you have achieved your first step – the Private Pilot Certificate.

Instrument Rating

Is added to your private license and permits you to fly by "instruments" in inclement weather, without visual reference to the ground or horizon.

To obtain this license, you must have the following:

  • At least a Private Pilot Certificate.
  • 50 hrs cross country flight to airports more than 50 NM from departure point including airports with GPS, VOR, ADF, and ILS approaches.
  • 40 hrs actual or simulated instrument time.
  • 15 hrs instrument flight instruction with an Instrument Flight Instructor.
  • Pass a written exam, consisting of multiple choice questions, with a score of 70% or better.
  • Successfully pass a flight exam given by an FAA designated Examiner. This will add an Instrument Rating to your Private Pilot Certificate.

Commercial Pilot Certificate

Allows you to carry passengers or cargo for compensation.

To obtain this license, you must do the following:

  • Hold a second class medical certificate.
  • Pass a written exam, consisting of multiple choice questions, with a score of 70% or better.
  • Have minimum of 250 hrs flight time, including 10 hrs in a complex aircraft, 100 hrs as pilot-in-command, 100 hrs cross country.
  • Successfully pass a flight exam given by an FAA designated Flight Examiner. This will earn you your Commercial Pilot Certificate.

Multi-Engine Rating

Allows you to fly aircraft with more than one engine.

Requires no written exam or specific training requirements; however, proficiency in a multi-engine aircraft including emergency procedures on one engine is mandatory, as well as an FAA flight exam. This training usually takes 10-16 hrs flight time.

ATP (Airline Transport Pilot)

Requires a minimum of 1500 hrs of flight time.
